Teaching Background

Ryan originally began studying music education while at Illinois State University, and she currently offers lessons to aspiring trumpet players. Teaching is an integral part of her work as an artist, and she believes in creating a space for students to express their distinct voice through the trumpet. While at ISU she maintained a private studio of 10 students ranging from beginners to advanced high school students. Teaching is an important part of her art and she enjoys presenting music to diverse communities. Notably, she organized and led the Cookin’ with Brass Quintet on a tour of rural Illinois schools and Chicago Public Schools offering free concerts and classes.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe that each student deserves lessons tailored to their identity and goals. All students grow and express creativity differently. It is my job as a teacher to create a space where students feel supported in their own journey. Lessons include establishing strong trumpet fundamentals, teaching standard etudes and solo repertoire, and empowering students to take on creative projects. As a teacher I identify a student’s current level and find various ways to make my knowledge accessible to them.
